Clinical assessment of moles and skin lesions — because early detection saves lives.
Every case is referred to a Consultant Dermatologist via Spot Check and reviewed within 3 days — with clinical recommendations, referrals, and GP letters provided.
Mole and skin lesion concerns are captured in clinic by a Registered Trichologist using a dermascope. Every case is referred to a Consultant Dermatologist through our partnership with Spot Check, with reviews completed within 3 days. The Consultant Dermatologist provides all clinical recommendations, GP letters, and referrals. This service does not constitute a diagnosis, and lesions are not treated or removed at The PMU Clinic.
A thorough clinical examination, not a quick glance.
Moles and skin lesions are incredibly common, but knowing which ones require attention — and which are entirely benign — requires a trained clinical eye. At The PMU Clinic, all mole and skin lesion concerns are captured in clinic by a Registered Trichologist using a dermascope. Every single case is then referred to a Consultant Dermatologist through our partnership with Spot Check, with a review completed within 3 days.
The Consultant Dermatologist provides all clinical recommendations, referrals, and GP letters. You will not receive a recommendation or referral from a trichologist — those decisions rest entirely with the Consultant Dermatologist.
Skin health and scalp health are closely linked. Many of our trichology clients also benefit from a concurrent skin lesion check, particularly where scalp lesions, sebaceous cysts, or unusual growths are present alongside hair loss.
A clear, methodical assessment process.
Intake & history
We begin by taking a full history of the lesion or mole — when it appeared, any changes in size, shape, colour or texture, and any relevant personal or family history of skin conditions.
In-clinic dermascope capture
Your Registered Trichologist examines each lesion using a dermascope — a non-invasive instrument that allows detailed visualisation of subsurface skin structures not visible to the naked eye. All findings are photographically documented and mapped to create a clinical record.
Spot Check — Consultant Dermatologist review
Every case is referred to a Consultant Dermatologist through our partnership with Spot Check. Your dermascope images and clinical notes are reviewed within 3 days, and all clinical recommendations are made by the Consultant Dermatologist, not the trichologist.
Recommendations, GP letter & referral
You receive a clear written summary of the Consultant Dermatologist's findings, a GP letter, and any referral documentation required. Every patient leaves with a complete clinical record and a clear next step.

Why professional assessment matters.
Every case reviewed by a Consultant Dermatologist
Without exception, every case is referred to a Consultant Dermatologist through our partnership with Spot Check. Reviews are completed within 3 days, with all clinical recommendations, GP letters, and referrals provided by the Consultant Dermatologist.
Early detection
The earlier a concerning lesion is identified and referred, the better the clinical outcome. Regular professional assessment is one of the most effective tools in skin health management.
Documented baseline
Dermascope images and clinical notes create a thorough record of your lesions at a point in time — invaluable for monitoring change and supporting any future appointments.
Scalp & skin in one visit
For trichology clients, combining a scalp health assessment with a skin lesion check means a more complete picture of your overall skin health — without an additional appointment.
Questions our clients often bring to us.
A mole has changed in size, shape or colour
Any change in an existing mole warrants professional assessment. Your Registered Trichologist will capture the lesion with a dermascope, and your case will be referred to the Consultant Dermatologist at Spot Check — reviewed within 3 days.
A new lesion has appeared
New lesions appearing in adulthood — particularly after the age of 40 — should always be assessed. Most are benign, but every case receives full Consultant Dermatologist review via Spot Check within 3 days.
A lesion is itching, bleeding or crusting
These symptoms can indicate irritation, infection, or — in some cases — a lesion requiring urgent attention. Your case will be referred to the Consultant Dermatologist at Spot Check and reviewed within 3 days.
Unusual growths on the scalp
Scalp lesions are often overlooked because they are hidden by hair. Our trichology background means we are well-placed to identify and capture scalp-specific presentations — every case is then referred to the Consultant Dermatologist at Spot Check.
Family history of skin cancer
A family history of melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancer increases your risk. Every case receives Consultant Dermatologist review via Spot Check within 3 days — a sensible and proactive step.
GP wait times are too long
Our service provides prompt in-clinic assessment with every case referred to a Consultant Dermatologist via Spot Check, reviewed within 3 days. You receive a GP letter and full clinical documentation as standard.
